Prefuse 73 & Edan @ 930 Club 6/1/06
Edan stopped by with Dhaga (sp?) and got old school funky with us last week in front of a partisan (and pretty big) crowd that included Edan’s mom. Edan seems like a good guy in general, and he’s had good chemistry with both of the guys i’ve seen him perform with.. they seemed to be enjoying themselves, and had to be pretty happy with the turnout.
Edan still has the two turntables and a mic crown for live performances that i have witnessed, and expanded the routine a bit since the last time i caught him, with an little more time devoted to the double duties, which was good… The odd kazoo/guitar interludes, not so good, and a bit confusing to my untrained eye. A solidly entertaining, if not spectacular show.
Prefuse 73 continues to confuse me. I guess i am getting old or something cause i just don’t get what is interesting. The beats don’t grab me, the the ’scratching’ isn’t a hip hop type scratching, an can’t really be judged on a performance level. The sum of all the parts doesn’t seem remarkable for any reason at all.. I left after a few songs, which were better than what i remembered from the last show of his i went to (i wouldn’t have seen this one if not for Edan opening), but i was bored and thought i could catch some of the Suns/Mavs game. I can’t say it was bad, but it has zero to get me interested.
This is what i said before the show..
Edan played a show, with several other acts, at DC9 two years ago, and blew me away. He rapped old school, about the old school, while scratching. AND he was pretty damned white and was wearing a Robocop shirt. Before the show i would have guessed he was an employee, after he was one of the most soulful cats i had ever seen rhyme live. He was Hip Hop. Since then i bought his first album, which didn’t compare to his excellence live, and he released a second album, which was widely hailed as a masterpiece. I expect it probably is. I hope Prefuse knew what he was getting into by having this guy open. He is money.
